Household composters

The basic requirement for municipalities when composting household waste is an insulated container with a lid and a mesh bottom that rodents cannot get into.

Each Swede generates an average of 250 kg of household waste per year.

About 100 kilograms, or 40%, is compostable, while the rest is non-compostable material, mostly packaging of various kinds. Composting and sorting at source can therefore reduce the amount of waste to a minimum.

The capacity of compost bins is often reported in liters per week. Converted to kilograms per week, the above figures give about 2 kilograms per person per week, equivalent to about 4 liters per week, since 1 liter weighs about 0.5 kilograms. A family with two children would need a container with a capacity of 15-20 liters per week, calculated in this way. The amount will of course vary depending on the type of housing and eating habits.

Compostable household waste is relatively uniform in the sense that its composition and nature does not vary much between families. On the other hand, the corresponding waste from restaurants, institutional kitchens and shops is characterized by a higher percentage of cooked food, whole fruit and vegetables.
