Examples of products covered by the CE marking requirement

Sludge separators
Sludge separators are covered by EN 12566-1 (Factory-made sludge separators) and EN 12566-4 (Sludge separators assembled on site from factory-made parts). The standards cover all sludge separators intended for WC and BDT wastewater. Sludge separators for BDT wastewater only are not covered.

The sludge separators are tested for strength, watertightness and durability. The test method also includes the parameter hydraulic capacity, which indicates how many grams of particles have passed during testing and thus becomes a measure of the separation capacity. Standardized plastic beads are used as test particles.

The standard itself does not contain any limit value for sludge separation. There is also no national limit value for what a sludge separator should achieve and the environmental administration cannot therefore require the sludge separator to achieve a certain level of sludge separation. It is the applicant for the plant who is responsible for demonstrating that the plant as a whole meets the environmental and health requirements.

Mini-sewage treatment plants
There are two harmonized standards for mini-sewage treatment plants up to 50 population equivalents (pe), EN 12566-3 “Prefabricated sewage treatment plants” and EN 12566-6 “Prefabricated plants for the treatment of sludge separated waste water”. The standard SS-EN 12566-3 covers products intended to be used for the treatment of untreated domestic wastewater and the standard SS-EN 12566-6 covers products intended to be used for the treatment of wastewater from sludge separators according to SS-EN 12566-1 or SS-EN 12566-4.

The number of person equivalents (pe) for which each product (model) is intended must be stated in the declaration of performance. SS-EN 12566-3 and SS-EN 12566-6 state, among other things, the duration of the purification efficiency test, the number of tests and analyses to be carried out, and that the degree of purification must be stated as a percentage and not in mg/l in the declaration. EN 12566-6 also includes infection control parameters.

Supplementary treatment stages
Supplementary treatment stages such as phosphorus traps and other post-polishing stages for mini-treatment plants or soil beds may be covered by EN 12566-7 “Prefabricated supplementary treatment stages”. As these are prefabricated products, infiltrations and landbeds are not covered as polishing stages for mini-treatment plants. EN 12566-7 does not cover systems for the reduction of microorganisms.
