All about suction line for sludge discharge
With a suction line, you can avoid paying for extra hoses when emptying sludge and make the work of the emptying staff easier.
If the distance between the sludge truck’s parking place/boat’s mooring place and the sludge plant is too long, you may have to pay a fee for extra hoses. With a suction line, you can reduce the distance as it acts as a connecting hose to the suction hose the staff connects to your suction line. Alternatively, you can arrange for a hardstanding with load-bearing capacity for heavy vehicles to allow the sludge truck to get closer to the site.
A suction line may be a maximum of 60 meters (this may vary depending on the terrain). It must be able to withstand vacuum and can be arranged as a loose suction hose that is placed out for emptying or a fixed suction line that is permanently installed, either above ground or buried. Underground is preferable as an above-ground hose can be damaged by the sun’s UV radiation. Each end of the line should have a coupling where we connect our suction hose to your suction line. At the end towards the emptying vehicle, a female coupling (M42) is fitted and at the end towards the plant, a male coupling (M42) is fitted.
Fixed suction line
– A fixed suction line should have a diameter of 75 mm to be compatible with the couplings.
– It is not advisable to have different dimensions of the line, the load will be greater on the narrower piece and the risk of breakdown increases.
– The line can be either a hose or plastic line designed for the purpose. Consult a professional! If hard pipes are used, the joints must be properly sealed and fixed.
– The couplings are placed at least 25 cm above ground.
– The distance between the coupling and the emptying vehicle must be a maximum of 10 meters
– The distance between the coupling and the plant must be a maximum of 1 meter. Therefore, think about how you place the coupling if you have several facilities next to each other.
Loose suction hose
– If you choose a loose suction hose, we recommend a 3-inch reinforced suction hose designed for the purpose. Consult a professional!
– The hose moves with great force when emptying, so place it carefully so that flowers, cars, outdoor furniture, etc. are not damaged.
– If you have several plants, the same suction hose can be used, just make sure that the hose length is sufficient to be able to empty all plants.
– The distance between the coupling and the emptying vehicle must be a maximum of 10 meters
– The distance between the coupling and the plant may be a maximum of 1 meter.
Keep in mind
– It is important that the hose and couplings are properly fitted. Otherwise, there is a risk that the installation will fail during emptying.
– The suction height, from the bottom of the plant to the pump of the emptying vehicle or the highest point on the ground, may be a maximum of 5-6 meters, see picture below.
– If possible, avoid positioning the hose in such a way as to create ‘sags’ or low points. If moisture gets into the hose or if sludge remains in the depressions, ice plugs may form at freezing temperatures.
– To prevent odors but also to prevent objects, animals / insects and moisture from entering the hose, there are lids to buy for the suction hose.
– When the installation is complete, notify the Contact Center so that we know that it exists and will be used, contact details are below.
– It is important that you mark both the connection closest to the emptying vehicle and the facilities to be emptied with a sludge sign.
Different municipalities have different rules.
– Södertörn (Huddinge. Haninge. Botkyrka. Nynäshamn. Salem)
If the customer chooses to provide their own suction hose/line, in order to avoid the hose connection fee, the following rules apply. The connection point from the truck’s parking space must not exceed 10 meters, (3-inch) suction line must have standard couplings, female coupling at the truck, male coupling at the plant plus a working hose at the plant that reaches all the way down to the bottom of the plant) suction hose must be long enough to reach the bottom of the plant.
Legal requirements
1. Grease traps must be located so that it is possible to run the hose without using the space where food is stored. (Appendix 2, L. 3:422)
2. Notification and VA notification may be required. Contact the building committee and the municipal water and sewage organization in the municipality concerned for information on whether it is required. (Appendix 2, K. 6 ch. 5 §)
3. Requirements specified in the municipality’s local general provisions for water and sewage (ABVA) and the
municipal waste regulations must be complied with. (Appendix 2, O.)
Guidelines
4. Grease traps and tanks for food waste must be placed so that collection can take place without
exposing collection staff to risks.
5. There must be a maximum of 4 meters from the ground surface to the bottom of the grease trap.
Hose pulling
6. The distance between the place where the tanker is parked and the sludge well must not exceed 10 meters during collection, unless there are special reasons.
7. Where hoses are pulled, the road must be free of obstacles such as fences, walls, stumps, plantations or other vegetation.
8.There must be no differences in level.
9. The suction height must not exceed 6 meters.
10. The hose must not be placed where people are moving, as the hose can move during emptying and cause people to stumble.
Lids
11. Lids should, as far as possible, be made of lightweight materials, such as plastic, fiberglass or sheet metal, and be able to be opened by one person. Lids that need to be lifted should not weigh more than 15 kg. Lids that only need to be pushed sideways without lifting shall not weigh more than 35 kg.
12. Lids shall be equipped with a lock to prevent unauthorized persons and children from opening the lid. The lock must
be easily opened by the collection staff.
13. Lids must be designed so that the collection staff can connect the hose without being exposed to health and safety risks.
14. Lids must not be covered and must be free of snow at the time of emptying.
15. The emptying point must be well marked and accessible to the collection staff. Tools other than those normally used for emptying must not be used to open the lid.
16.When tanks are placed outdoors, the ground 1 meter around the lid must be hardened.
