GENERAL ABOUT COMPOST WORMS

The worms found in most compost starts are the Swedish Eisenia Foetida and the Italian Dendrobaena Veneta. These weigh about 0.5 grams and eat half their weight every day.

When worms are thriving, i.e. good temperature, adequate humidity, abundant oxygen and a good carbon-nitrogen balance, the worms multiply violently. It is estimated that a fully grown worm produces one pupa per day on average. This means that you can start with a few hundred worms that will gradually adapt their population to the amount of food they receive. There is no risk that they will become too numerous, but they will remain at the right number at all times, except in the event of major changes in feeding.

The worm humus, what remains after the waste has passed through the worm’s body, contains readily available organic matter that is ideal for fertilizing potted plants, flower beds, vegetables and for top dressing the lawn. Mixed with peat moss it makes an excellent planting soil. The worm humus is “strong” and 2 tsp per month per potted plant is enough.

Worms thrive best at a temperature around 20 degrees. They die at temperatures above 30 degrees and below 0 degrees. The compost must therefore be stored frost-free or insulated in winter and protected from strong sunlight in summer.

YOU CAN PUT THIS IN THE WORM COMPOST

Your new pets will eat all the food waste, but even paper towels that you wipe the table with are fine. Plastic, sheet metal, glass and the like are of course not acceptable. Nor can you feed the worms paint residues or solvents

EXAMPLE OF WORM FOOD

COFFEE SUMP

FRUIT

VEGETABLES

FISH

MEAT

EGG SHELLS

END-OF-LIFE HOUSEPLANTS

For the balance in your compost to be good, you should sprinkle with leaves, sawdust, peat moss or some other carbon-rich and dry substrate at regular intervals. If they put in as much litter as waste, there is usually a good balance.
