Multrum and traditional outhouses

In old outhouses, there was sometimes no container under the seat, but it was poured away when it became full during the right season. This is not approved today.
In the multi-purpose room, all waste is collected in a container under the toilet, in large compost tanks or small buckets that are replaced as you go.
Multrummet can also take care of the compostable household waste.
The container requires a lot of space and is usually placed in the basement or in the ground directly under the toilet.
Problems with flies, bad odors and excess liquid can occur if it becomes too moist in the compost.
It can often be remedied by adding bedding or having urine sorting.
Emptying is done via a hatch in the lower part of the container and should be done every or at most every other year.
The residual product can be used as a soil improver
The advantage of Multrum and outhouses:
- The large volume makes the compost process better and you don’t have to monitor the system as much.
- No indoor handling of the compost.
- More plastic in the toilet area as only the toilet or seat takes up space.
- Usually no energy input in the form of fans or vaporization of urine.
The disadvantage is multi-purpose rooms and outhouses:
- The large space systems take if you have large tank
- Requires space directly under the toilet.
- If you have problems with odors and flies, they often get into the toilet area
- Some people find it uncomfortable to look down the downpipe.
- Sometimes you have to handle undecayed waste for post-composting
- Difficult with multiple toilets to the same container
Mull toilets

The mould toilet has a small container adjacent to the toilet and usually requires an electrical connection. In the tank, the waste is stirred at intervals to speed up decomposition. A heating element and a fan allow the liquid to evaporate and the humidity to be controlled.
For the toilet to work well, the indoor temperature and the addition of bedding materials are required.
Toilets require careful maintenance and regular emptying to function properly.
Urine separating dry toilets

Sorting out urine reduces the risk of odors and flies and makes the dry feces easier to handle and compost.
You also get an environmental benefit, as the urine can be used for fertilizer.
If you have an existing toilet and want urine separation, you can buy an insert that you insert directly into the toilet and that separates the urine.
With the urine separation comes a hose that leads the urine away. The hose should be connected to a plastic canister or to a tank.
There are also ready-made toilets with urine separation available for purchase. The toilet often comes with several latrine barrels that you can use for composting the latrine.
