Wells must be equipped with safety devices to protect against accidents involving children. The Public Order Act states that “Wells, pools and similar installations shall be equipped with the safety devices required by the location and nature of the installations.

According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s rules, a manhole cover must not weigh more than 15 kg or 25 kg if it is possible to remove the cover when emptying the sludge.

The requirement for a safety device applies to both existing and newly constructed wells.

The responsibility for providing a well with the necessary safety device “rests with the owner or the person who is in the owner’s place by virtue of a contract of use or otherwise”.

Keep in mind that many fully approved locking mechanisms can still be opened by a clever child, with some kind of breaking tool.
A fall protection inside the lid is therefore recommended.
