Wells must be equipped with safety devices to protect against accidents involving children. The Public Order Act states that “Wells, pools and similar installations shall be equipped with the safety devices required by the location and nature of the installations.

According to the Swedish Work Environment Authority’s rules, a manhole cover must not weigh more than 15 kg or 25 kg if it is possible to remove the cover when emptying the sludge.

The requirement for a safety device applies to both existing and newly constructed wells. The responsibility for ensuring that a well is fitted with the necessary safety device “rests with the owner or the person who is in the owner’s place as a result of a right of use agreement or on some other basis”. Keep in mind. many fully approved locking mechanisms can still be opened by a clever child, using some kind of breaking tool. A fall protection device is therefore recommended.
