Thread sealing

When threaded fittings are to be joined, flax and paste or thread tape are used.

The rope and paste are cheaper and thicker than the thread tape, but more difficult to use for the untrained eye. If the rope is properly applied, the threaded part can be turned back and forth without any leakage, and it is good to be able to do this if the parts need to be readjusted.

The paste is used to make the rope more pliable. A good paste that we can recommend is called Locher paste and it is available in tubes. It is non-toxic and therefore also suitable for cold water.
Before applying the rope or thread tape to the threaded part, scrape it with a hacksaw blade. This is done to prevent the rope/tape from sliding around. This is very important on chrome and other shiny surfaces.

This is not possible with the threaded tape! If the threaded part is twisted back, the tape is torn, resulting in leakage.
The advantage of thread tape is that it is cleaner and easier to work with.

Instead of flax and thread tape, there is liquid “thread sealant” in small plastic bottles of the “Loctite” brand. Often a drop on the thread is enough before the parts are joined. It can be a good alternative to thread tape.
