Pressure switches, pump control, motor protection, fuses

Pressure switch, Pump control, Motor protection, what should you have?

1. Pressure switch (pressostat)

The pressure switch controls when the pump starts and stops depending on the water pressure in the system.

It “senses” the pressure in the pipe or the hydrophore and automatically turns the pump on/off.

  • Start pressure When the pressure falls below this value, the pump starts (e.g. 2.0 bar).
  • Stop pressure When the pressure rises to this value, the pump stops (e.g. 3.5 bar).
  • Simple and proven control.
  • Can be adjusted (start/stop pressure).
  • Always required if you have a hydrophore/hydropress.
  • No electronic protection function.
  • Does not protect against dry running (the pump can run dry if the well runs out).

2. Pump control (electronic flow monitor / “Presscontrol”)

An electronic pump control combines several functions:

  • Starts the pump when it senses flow (you open a tap).
  • Stops when the flow stops (the tap is closed).
  • Often has built-in dry-running protection.
  • Some also have a built-in check valve.
  • Automatic operation without a separate pressure tank (in small systems).
  • Built-in dry-running protection.
  • Compact, easy installation.
  • Less pressure stability without a booster pump (pump starts/stops often).
  • Shorter service life with frequent starts/stops.

3. Motor protection (overload protection)

The motor protection protects the pump motor itself from:

  • overcurrent (too high a load),
  • phase loss (three-phase),
  • jamming or blocking.

It is therefore an electrical protection, not a control.

  • Prevents the motor from burning up in the event of overload.
  • Required according to electrical standards in many fixed installations.
  • Cheap insurance coverage (a pump motor is expensive).
  • Requires the correct setting according to the pump’s rated current (A).
  • Does not protect against water-related problems (dry running, leakage).
