What is the difference between PP, PP-ML and PVC drain pipes?

PP stands for polypropylene and is the most common material for modern drain pipes. It is flexible, impact-resistant, can withstand high temperatures and can withstand vibrations and ground settlements better than PVC. PP is used both indoors and outdoors, but especially in underground pipe systems where you want pipes that can withstand movements in the ground without cracking. PP is also more resistant to chemicals than PVC and a more environmentally friendly material.

PP-ML stands for PP multilayer, i.e. a multilayer pipe in polypropylene. It is PP pipe with an extra layer that provides better sound absorption and higher stability. PP-ML is often used indoors in properties where you want quiet drain systems, for example in apartment buildings or in shafts where you want to reduce noise from flushing. They are more dimensionally stable than regular PP pipes, but still more flexible than PVC.

PVC is stiffer than PP, which makes it easy to install straight installations, but it can withstand less impact and ground movements. PVC can crack if the ground moves or if the temperature gets low.

In summary: PP is flexible and durable, PP-ML is PP with extra sound insulation and stability, and PVC is a stiffer and cheaper material that works well indoors but is more sensitive in the ground.
