Common Types of Water & Sewer Wells (VA Wells)

Stormwater Well (drain and rainwater)

Often equipped with a sand trap and grate.

Collects rainwater from:

  • yards

  • roads

  • roofs

  • drainage systems


Wastewater Well (sewage)

Handles household wastewater (toilet, shower, kitchen).
Often called an inspection well.

Used for:

  • cleaning

  • inspection

  • height transitions

  • changes in pipe direction


Service Connection Well

The location where a property connects to the municipal water and sewer network.


LTA / LPS Pump Well

A well containing a wastewater pump that transports sewage where gravity flow is not possible.

Common in:

  • rocky or uneven terrain

  • wastewater systems for scattered housing

  • long distances to the main sewer line


Water Meter Well

A well containing the municipal water meter.
Used when the meter cannot be installed inside the building (no basement or long distance to the service point).


Distribution and Valve Wells

Contain valves, fittings, and systems for distributing water or pressurized water.


Stormwater Chamber / Infiltration Well

Collects and distributes stormwater in larger drainage or infiltration systems.
