Aquatron

The ecological toilet system Aquatron is a composting toilet utilizing ordinary Water Closets. Our Aquatron standard systems operate by using just the momentum of the flushing water, centrifugal force and gravity. Therefore, neither moving parts nor chemicals or electricity are needed in the separation and composting processes. Aquatron Systems combine the comfort and hygiene of a WC system with the ecological and environmental characteristics of a bio-degrading toilet system.

What is needed after an Aquatron?

The Aquatron system simply replaces the first chamber in a three-chamber well where large particles and sludge must stay. Faeces and paper fall into the bio chamber and the flush water with urine is led to a sludge separator where the household’s other BDT water is mixed.

Sludge separators for the Aquaton system need to be half the size of a normal sludge separator depending on the number of residents in the household.

There are many Aquatron users who for many years have their own sludge handling of their sludge separator with a sludge dewaterer where the sludge is mixed with the Aquatron compost for post-composting.

Dimensioning of infiltration after an Aquatron

The rules are different in different countries and at a local level check with your local environmental office for advice.

As the Aquatron system releases WC water, you must have an approved infiltration dimensioned for WC water.

When using a urine-sorting toilet and or UV treatment, the surface can be reduced.

In some places, you can release the water into a pond or reedbed.

Composting

There are different systems where you can have final composting directly in the Aquatron biochamber or to switch with a new container and let it fully decompose.

Or you can post-compost in a separate latrine compost and it takes about 12–24 months in Sweden’s climate.

If you have multi-compartment systems such as 4×100, you rotate a full compartment and let it post-compost, and depending on the temperature (the warmer the better, at least 15 degrees) and the balance in the compost, there are many systems that only empty one compartment at a time loamy soil every 10 years.

Many systems are installed indoors in heated spaces and then composting is much faster.

Compost worms speed up the process further and mixing in household food scraps makes the compost more viable. You flush the leftover food down your toilet directly into the compost!
